Tomssaw, also called Port-a-mill, was started in 1990 with an LT40HD Wood Mizer sawmill. It's purpose was to custom saw, onsite and rejuvenate the custom of sawing one's own trees.
These are pictures of those who became customers. Many have returned time and time again. There are farmers, backyard cabinet-makers, home owners, students and wood product companies. All of them utilizing trees that would have, otherwise, been destined for a landfill.

Mr. Tommy, in St. George, Ga. acquired the largest pine in Charlton County. It was owned by Mr. Raulerson and apparently died from a lightening strike.

He and two friends felled the tree toward the swamp and retrieved as much from the butt end as was possible with the tractor they had available. Much of the top remained in the swamp.

From this tree, Mr. Tommy built a recreational kitchen and dining hall. It provided the wood for all of the studs, rafters, siding, porch and the furniture inside with some wide boards left over which have been used to build tables for friends.

Harry Nelson was a crop duster in Ft. Pierce, Florida. He grew up with my mother and was friends with Charlie and me. I liked him a lot.

In the late 1960's, and through 1970, I was a newspaper photographer for The Fort Pierce News Tribune, freelanced for the Dixie Cycle News, helped cover Daytona's bike week for Cycle and provided photographs for local racers. Here are some of the pictures I took that have been reproduced as good as I could get a scanner to copy.

Here are a few pictures showing how a typical short-wood, pulp-wood truck was built. They are a dying breed of men, phased out by technology, who put their children through college with trucks like these.
